A Name... it's what defines and describes you. Usually it reveals some facet of your character or training, or is chosen to sound pleasing. It can be kind or cruel, depending on the intent with which it is given.

It's a sign that you are not only owned, but treasured... think of it as the difference between a piece of costume jewelry and the Hope Diamond - one is interchangable to some extent, it may be enjoyed, may be owned and wanted, but there are other similar pieces in the world. Hundreds... maybe thousands.

The other is Named, something that can be recognized, something that sets it apart, shows that in someone's eyes it has more than usual worth, that it matters. That it exists.

In serious BDSM communities, slave relationships, etc. it is of incredible importance. A slave without a name is considered worthless... it's assumed that the slave in some way failed to be pleasing or obedient, or is somehow of lower quality than those slaves who have been given names.

It's also a mark of ownership... much like a collar, a brand, etc. No free person would attach so much importance to their name, after all, it's theirs - no one is going to take it away from them, or change it on a moment's whim... only a slave is so thoroughly owned that even his or her name becomes part of the package, adaptable, and like any other privilege a slave has, it can be taken away.

Otherwise, it's just a waste... and no owner would be foolish enough to waste something so precious on an untrained or unappreciative slave.
